We would rather lose a deal than lose six months of your time. There are situations where another option is genuinely the better call, and we will say so on the demo.
Because deployments vary enormously in call volume, integration depth, and workflow count, and because most of these companies sell to enterprise brokerages where pricing is negotiated. That is normal, but it does mean any comparison page quoting exact competitor rates is inventing them. Ask each vendor directly and ask specifically whether you are billed per minute, per call, or flat.
What exactly gets written to my TMS when the call ends, and which endpoint does it use. A vendor that can answer that in detail has done the integration work. A vendor that says the update is emailed to your team has built a very expensive answering service.
If you have engineers and a clear internal owner, it is genuinely possible now, and the API surfaces on modern TMS platforms are good enough to make it work. The parts that take longer than people expect are telephony reliability, escalation logic, and the hundred small conversational failures that only show up in production. Most brokerages under a certain size find that the build is not the hard part, the maintenance is.
For a single workflow with a documented TMS API, about a week is realistic. Anyone promising a full multi-workflow deployment in two days is either skipping the integration or skipping the testing, and you will find out which in month two.
They should get a human quickly, and any vendor whose agent fights that is building the wrong thing. Measure vendors on transfer quality, not just on how many calls they contain without a human.
